Cuisine From All Around The World
Newcastle is often voted the best student city in the UK, and one of the biggest parts of student life is learning about where to find the best food, for a good price. Whether you are looking for some late-night grub on your way home from a club, a hangover cure at breakfast or a cheap eat during the day, you’ll find a wide range of cuisine from all over the world in this vibrant and thriving city.
Something for All Budgets
Newcastle is the fifth largest city in the country, so it’s no surprise that you can find some great scran here – from local cuisine to international, vegetarian and vegan. There is something for all budgets to enjoy. If you want to take in some of the local North East cuisine why not try some pease pudding, a savory pudding that is made from legumes and usually eaten with cooked meats. Try it along with a stottie cake to feel like a proper local! The stottie cake is a Geordie loaf – a stodgy flatbread.
Student Favourites
There are plenty of special places to eat out as a student in Newcastle though, with a range of independent places to sink your teeth into some tasty treats. These include some local gems, with heart-warming friendly faces, such as Fat Hippo Underground on Shakespeare St (as well as street food vans at various Newcastle events at different locations throughout the year), providing delicious juicy burgers.
Other great food independents for students to enjoy include As You Like It for casual food, drink, and relaxing vibes, Lane 7 (combining bowling, ping-pong, karaoke, and amazing burgers), and Quilliam Brothers’ Teahouse for brunch, pastries, and a large selection of loose-leaf teas right on the doorstep of campus to get you through a hard day of study.
Grainger Market
La Petite Crêperie is one of the standouts in the Grainger Market, which is home to a wide variety of food stalls, crafts, grocers, and much more. Here though you can find exquisite desserts and snacks as a treat after working so hard at university. Za Za Bazaar on Newgate St is a home to world cuisine, a brilliant place for big groups of students to come together and eat flavours from the world over, no matter the celebration.
From Independent to High Street Brands
Aside from the independent names you’ll also have access to some big-name popular chains in the world of food. Chinatown in Newcastle is also a short walk from campus and is home to many amazing Chinese restaurants.
The Best Student City
With a tag as the best student city in the UK, Newcastle as a city is always on the move to give students a great night out. Geordie’s are well known for being massive party animals, and as a student living at Barker House you’ll be in the perfect location to gear up to a big night out on the town, and be close to home to recover the next day!
There are many different student-themed nights at bars and clubs in the city centre each week, some fantastic clubs with local celebrities hanging out, and cheap and cheerful pubs and dive bars to stretch your student loan even further whilst still having a great time. From the bars and clubs in the city centre to Jesmond and its range of pubs, there is something for everyone in Newcastle.
Legendary Night Outs
One of the big names for students in Newcastle is Florita’s. It is a tropical-themed cocktail bar that has many drinks offers and promotions on throughout the week and is just loads of fun whenever you choose to go. The legendary Wakiki party is every Tuesday night and it’s here that you can enjoy tunes that evoke Las Vegas, Hawaii and Ibiza. Club Tropicana on a Monday night is also a firm favourite with a dressed-up feel and classic drinks on the menu.
Digital is one of the biggest student clubs around in Newcastle. There are four dance floors, capacity for over 2,000 people, and there are some of the top DJs around playing here each week. It has the oldest running club night in the city each Monday, with 8-p entry before midnight and some fantastic drinks offers.
The VIP Experience
The Botanist is another favourite and one where you can take superb selfies with the sumptuous décor to splash all over your Instagram. It is the perfect place for a quiet date with your lover or a big night out with your gang of mates.
The cocktail menu is incredible, full of plant-themed inventions, such as the Poppy and Pomegranate Martini. Alternatively, why not head down to somewhere made famous by Geordie Shore, and you might just see the cast filming and getting rotten on the dance floor at Bijoux on Mosley Street. You can book VIP booths and drinks packages for big birthdays or other events too.
There is always a healthy crowd of celebrity-style icons and local celebs at Bijoux, but it’s still a reasonable price for students in Newcastle to enjoy without breaking the bank. Tuesday’s are a big student night here, in prep for Wakiki at Florita’s.
Sports Mad
Newcastle is a sports mad city – or we should rephrase that, a football-mad city! It is one of those rare things in the UK, a big city with only one football club and a massive cathedral of a stadium that is located in the heart of the city, standing tall for all to see. Many greats of the game have played and managed at St James’ Park – from Jackie Milburn to Kevin Keegan, Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer.
If you play well, with heart and desire for the Toon these fans will hail you as a legend forever. If you are interested in football, or sport at all, it is a truly life-changing experience to head on down to watch the boys in black and white play in the Premier League – as passionate a fan base as you can find in this country. With our Newcastle student accommodation being so close to the action you can easily walk to and from the ground on match day to soak up the atmosphere.
More Than Football
It isn’t just about football though in the North East (honestly). There are other big sports teams and events to watch, take part in, and enjoy. The geography makes it a fantastic base to explore the region, with miles of beautiful cycle routes and hiking trails just a short hop away from the city centre. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned cyclist there is something for you, from leisurely social cycle rides to extreme coast-to-coast cycle paths that you can start in this region.
You’ll also find beaches to explore and surf from during the warmer months, climbing walls, athletics, basketball, ice hockey, and rugby to be part of or to watch. For Rugby Union head on over to watch the Newcastle Falcons, or why not try the Gateshead Thunder in Rugby League. Newcastle is in a great location to serve you well if you are a golf fanatic, with a range of golf courses in the area with amazing views of the countryside and some high-quality links and greens to play on.
Get Involved
At both universities, there are many different societies and sports clubs to become involved with and to stay fit and healthy throughout your time studying in the city. Newcastle University is home to 65 sports clubs, from those that are competitive to just weekly-leisurely meet-ups and matches. ‘Team Newcastle’ is part of the Athletic Union.
Whatever your wishes, and whether you want to join a competitive team or keep fit on your own, living as a student in Newcastle will provide you with plenty of options. As such a large city there are plenty of green spaces, parks (Leazes Park and Jesmond Dene Park), and the river Tyne for you to explore the outdoors for long walks and running routes.
Everything You Need
If you love shopping you’ll love living in Newcastle student accommodation, as you’ll be just a short walk from a wide range of shopping outlets. From high street brands and gleaming new shopping centres, to independent boutiques and crafty stores, and everything else in between, there is so much great shopping in this beacon of the North East of England. It is always important to understand exactly what options you have as a student when moving to a new city as a student.
Newcastle Markets
Markets are always a fantastic way to get to understand the pulse of a city, to see how the locals live life. Grainger Market is a wonderful covered market and has been open for over 200-years. There are over 100-outlets inside, ranging from local food and greengrocers, to arts and crafts, clothing, butchers and much more. A big part of the culture of Newcastle is the Quayside Market that runs each Sunday. It is a really pleasurable way to spend a lazy Sunday, walking along the waterfront, browsing the many stalls.
High Street Brands
If you are looking for high street brands and the shops that you know and love there are several great shopping centres in Newcastle within easy reach of your accommodation as a student. Eldon Square is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, with loads of the big brand names you know, such as a flagship John Lewis, Apple, and Topshop.
The Metrocentre is another with plenty of shops, restaurants, and a big Odeon IMAX cinema complex. Fenwick is a shopping centre spread over five floors, home to a luxury beauty hall and plenty else to explore, such as Barbour.
The main high streets areas for great shopping that combines both big brand names (like Primark) and independent boutiques and high-end specialist stores (such as Vivienne Westwood) include Northumberland Street and Grainger Town and its stunning classical architecture.
Explore More Shopping
High Bridge is a wonderful cobbled street that is home to an array of interesting and quirky boutiques and independent clothing stores. High quality menswear can be found at End Clothing, whilst those of you who love vinyl should visit RPM Music to explore the stacks of second-hand records, music t-shirts, music DVDs and a good chat about all sorts of genres from funk and soul, to Hip-Hop, Indie and rock, and the blues.
Jesmond is a great area to explore for many reasons and is easy to reach via the metro system. Here, there are many great independent stores and boutiques on Clayton Road, Brentwood Avenue, and Osbourne Road, including the award-winning Jules B and its designer clothing options for men and women.
The Angel of The North
As with other big cities in the UK you’ll never be bored as a student living in Newcastle, you’ll be within easy reach of every event and attraction you could ever wish to visit. For landmarks there are some iconic places to explore as a new student in the city, including the Angel of the North (the world’s largest angel sculpture), The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, the Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge, and the historic quayside.
Galleries and Museums
For art and culture there is plenty to explore, with The Biscuit Factory a great place to learn more about contemporary art and design in the UK, The Discovery Museum highlighting the important history of Newcastle and the surrounding area, and the Laing Art Gallery that has some exquisite examples of British watercolours and paintings from the 18th to the 20th century.
Music Festivals
If you are looking for some festivals to investigate throughout the year there is plenty on offer in Newcastle, from music events to food, art and culture to family-friendly events and those perfect to go with a big group of friends.
The Great Exhibition of the North was the perfect example of a massive event that brings people from the whole of the country to Newcastle in a successful way. It was 80-days of art, culture, design and how the North East continues to innovate and inspire. The festival took place in many venues throughout the city and the region, including the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Sage Gateshead, and the Discovery Museum.
Art, Film and More
The Newcastle International Film Festival was a massive success in its inaugural year in 2018, a four-day event that hosted world premieres and a wide range of interesting events and exhibitions, Q&As with filmmakers and actors, and a plan to promote local talent. Another exciting date on the Newcastle calendar is the Late Shows, which is a free, late-night culture crawl that hopes to inspire people to visit cultural sites and events that they otherwise wouldn’t usually go to. You can visit venues and exhibitions with later opening hours than usual, and plenty of art, dance, performance, music, creative workshops and exhibitions to explore throughout the entire city.
World Renowned
There are great music festivals in the region, with the Lindisfarne Festival home to a four-day event at the end of August that welcomes many different music acts and genres in a small, casual and laid-back affair over 8-stages.
The festival also promotes local produce, food stalls and market stalls as a great way to celebrate the end of the summer season. The Mouth of the Tyne Festival is a large spectacular that attracts world-renowned acts and around 100,000 visitors for a wonderful weekend that shows what a great city Newcastle is, whilst Hit the North Festival promotes local musicians and artists, with a selection of established artists playing the line-up.
