Student Accommodation Goldsmiths | University of London
You’d be hard pushed to find an educational institution with a community as close knit and a heritage as rich as Goldsmiths University. Based in New Cross, a highly-populated area of south-east London with a considerable art and music scene, it has creativity at its core and boasts “academic excellence and imaginative course content combine to make a place where creative minds can thrive and ideas are allowed to grow.”
The courses and research activities span the arts, humanities, social sciences, cultural studies, computing, business and management across 20 academic departments.
Goldsmiths takes pride in treating everyone as an individual and, with all its courses delivered from one campus, it promises that students will never feel isolated or overlooked. Students are afforded the space to be themselves whilst always offering an ear to those who need it.
Recognised as a public research university, it is a constituent college of the University of London, having been founded in 1891 as Goldsmiths’ Technical and Recreative Institute by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, acquired by the University of London in 1904, and renamed Goldsmiths’ College before rebranding in 2006.
As it stands, almost a fifth of its students come from outside the UK - 114 countries to be exact - and more than half of all undergraduates are mature students. Roughly a third of students at Goldsmiths are postgraduates.
Some of its hugely-influential alumni have taken the world of arts and humanities by storm over the years. Musicians Graham Coxon, the guitarist in Blur, James Blake and Katy B are all graduates, as are Steve McQueen, Mark Wallinger, Damien Hirst and Antony Gormley.
League tables based on the Research Assessment Exercise have all placed Goldsmiths within the top 35 research-intensive universities in the UK –33rd in the Times Higher Education, 34th in The Guardian and 24th in The Independent.

Its Anthropology department was beaten only by Oxford and Cambridge in the University guide 2011 by The Guardian, and it stood seventh in the University Guide 2014 for Art and Design. There was more to celebrate that year, as The Complete University Guide put Goldsmiths in the UK’s top 10 universities with its Department of Media and Communications. That was followed in April 2015 by the department being named the second best in the UK and 22nd in the world.
The community theme continues with hundreds of Goldsmiths students and staff volunteering in the local area for charities and voluntary organisations like Action for Refugees in Lewisham and New Cross Learning. In the 2016/17 academic year, staff and students made regular contributions to the foodbank at the nearby St James Church.
Two of Goldsmiths’ research centres also focus on community engagement and community development issues - The Centre for Community Engagement Research has created research partnerships between Goldsmiths students and local organisations who need research help, and The Centre for Urban and Community Research began in 1997 with research focused on the impact of local regeneration schemes in Lewisham. Today its reach is worldwide.
