When Does Student Finance Drop in 2026/27?
Starting life at university is an exciting time, but working out when your maintenance loan payments will hit your bank account is a major concern for a lot of new starters. If you are wondering when student finance drops this year, you’re not alone. Getting an idea of when your payments will be made is essential for planning your budget, buying important equipment for your course, and making sure rent payments are made on time.
In this short guide, we’ll break down the student finance payment schedule for the 2026/27 academic year. We’ll also explain how the loans work in different parts of the country, and what to do if you have issues with your money.

When Does Student Finance Hit My Account?
For most undergraduate students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, your maintenance loan is split into three instalments across the academic year. Rather than paying one lump sum, your funds will be released at the start of each term.
The standard payment windows for full-time students starting in Autumn 2026 are:
- Instalment 1 (Autumn Term): Late September to early October 2026.
- Instalment 2 (Spring Term): Early to mid-January 2027
- Instalment 3 (Summer Term): Early to mid-April 2027.
It’s important to know that there are no set dates for receiving your loan. Two students studying at different universities are likely to see their money a few days apart.
How Are Student Loans Processed?
Before you see that money in your account, two things need to have happened.
- Your application is fully approved. Your identity, household income assessment, and National Insurance number must be verified by Student Finance England or your respective body.
- Registration Confirmation: Your university must send official confirmation to the Student Loans Company that you have enrolled and attended.
Once confirmed, you’ll see the funds hit your account in a few days.
What About Scottish Students?
If you receive your payments from the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), your student finance payments work differently. Instead of three payments, you’ll receive a monthly top-up of your funds. SAAS payments are usually made on the 7th of each month.
What About Tuition Fee Loan Payments?
Unlike your maintenance loan, you will never see the tuition fee payment in your bank account.
The Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees directly to your university in three instalments across the year. As long as your student finance application is approved, your university handles this payment.
Reasons Your Payment is Delayed
If your predicted payment dates have passed and your bank account remains empty, a few common issues could be responsible:
- You Haven’t Completed Enrolment: Your university cannot confirm registration with the SLC until you formally complete online registration or collect your student ID card on campus.
- Late Application: If you submitted your student finance application after the deadline, your application may still be processing. You will still get paid, but it may take a few weeks longer.
- Bank Details Are Incorrect: Check your online Student Finance account to ensure your account number and sort code are accurate.
- Bank Holidays and Processing Times: Remember to allow 3 full working days.
How to Check Your Payment Schedule
You can check the exact dates your payment is expected online by logging into your student finance portal. Simply find the section for this year and view your payment schedule. You’ll find all the information you need on the SFE website.
