Where do you shop when you haven’t got time to think?

Two stores lie on campus, and neither asks you to leave your lecture early. Broadwalk Store, on Peel Park Campus next to the Library Cafe, stocks groceries, frozen and chilled food, a high-protein range, meal deals and hot food, including Rollover hotdogs, plus stationery and branded clothing. It opens 8 am to 7 pm on weekdays and 8 am to 3 pm at weekends. Allerton Store, on the ground floor of the Allerton Building at Frederick Road Campus, covers everyday essentials, drinks, snacks, meal deals and freshly baked pastries, open 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays and closed at weekends. Think of these as backup, not your main shop. They are useful on the days planning simply didn’t happen.

What’s closest if you live at Riverside House?

Students at Riverside House, right in Salford’s Greengate and New Bailey area, are well-placed. Tesco Express on New Bailey Street opens 6 am to 11pm daily, with quieter shopping hours on Wednesday and Saturday mornings between 9 am and 10 am for anyone who prefers a calmer trip.

Sainsbury’s Local is just around the corner on Stanley Street. Both stores fall inside the New Bailey development itself, a five-minute walk from its restaurants and shops and an eight-minute walk from the Metrolink, so a full shop is closer than a bus ride away.

Where’s the best spot for a weekly shop?

For the bigger trip, head to Salford Shopping Centre in Pendleton. It isn’t far from the University of Salford’s main campus, close enough for a short bus ride, and it’s built for exactly this kind of shop. It houses an Aldi, Tesco, Iceland, Heron Foods, Poundland, Home Bargains and Save A Lot. A market has operated alongside the shops since 1970, so there’s fresh produce here too, not just the big chains. Save this one for a planned trip rather than a quick dash.

How do you get between your room, campus and the shops?

Salford Crescent station sits neatly between the Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses, and students get 50% off adult season tickets through Northern Railway’s higher education scheme, worth knowing if the shops or a placement mean regular trips. Bus 50 is free for students and staff on weekdays; just show your ID card, and several other routes stop at The Crescent.

Insider Tips

  • Keep the campus stores for real emergencies and let New Bailey or Pendleton handle the actual shop; nobody wants to carry four bags of shopping across the city.
  • A TOTUM card or student ID is worth flashing before you pay. Participating discounts change often, so it costs nothing to ask.
  • Living near Riverside House and caught out after a late lecture? The New Bailey Tesco Express stays open until 11 pm most nights.
