History Of Women’s Equality Day

It is only right that we mention the history of Women’s Equality Day first and foremost.

Women’s Equality Day takes place annually since it was first celebrated in 1971.

The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which allowed women the right to vote in 1920.

Although, it wasn’t until 1973 Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States formally recognized August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

Despite finding its roots in the USA, Women’s Equality Day can still be celebrated within the UK, or wherever you are!

We believe that this day should be an official national day globally to show solidarity and support towards women.

Why Is Women’s Equality Day Important?

Women’s Equality Day is special as it focuses on feminism and reminds us of the importance of gender equality.

This important day highlights how women have faced discrimination throughout history and still do to this day, simply for belonging to a gender minority.

It also reminds us of the violence and hard work women have had to overcome which has led to the progress in women’s rights that we have in many countries today, although in many places this still isn’t the case.

On this annual day, we recognise the journey that women have been on and shine a light on issues that women across the world still continue to face.

From gender pay gaps to abortion rights to a lack of equal opportunities to gender-based violence to gender-based discrimination, the fight is far from over.

If you are wondering whether Women’s Equality Day 2023 is important, hell yeah it is!

The Rise Of #GirlPower

The #GirlPower slogan has its origins from The Spice Girls song ‘Girl Power’ which had a huge impact not just on the music industry and pop culture but also feminism too.

It was released during a time in the 1990’s where feminism was an unpopular concept and sexism towards women was the ‘norm’.

The all-girl band influenced a generation of women, empowering them to celebrate their gender and empower one another with their lyrics “If you wannabe my lover, you gotta get with my friends”.

Now, ‘Girl Power’ is a recognised slogan that encourages and celebrates women’s empowerment, independence, confidence and strength.

In recent months, girl power has become a focus within the feminist community and has become a social media trend on the likes of TikTok.

Gen Z have introduced a new wave of feminism and are using social media to empower one another creating women focused content, and we absolutely LOVE it. Who runs the world? Girls!

The videos under this hashtag positively impacts the global community and empowers women.

Women supporting women is what we live for, and posts on platforms like TikTok provide a safe and empowering space for women across the globe to share videos and connect, unify and celebrate.

How To Empower Each Other

Wondering how you can empower each other this Women’s Equality Day 2023?

Below we’ve listed some ways women can empower each other, but also ways in which men can help to empower us and fight against gender equality, discrimination and injustice.

Carry on reading to find out!

1. Encourage Other Women

Women’s rights have come a long way, but there are still ways in which women are not yet equal to men and don’t receive the same treatment as those of the opposite gender.

So, it’s no doubt that it can be hard for women to feel strong, when they’re constantly fighting a battle for gender equality.

Whether it’s in the workplace or within education or any other part of society, it’s important to encourage women to seek out new opportunities and pursue their hopes and dreams.

Make sure to celebrate the accomplishments of other women and don’t compare yourself to others.

No matter how a woman expresses herself or if she fits outside of traditional gender norms, make sure to celebrate every woman and their uniqueness.

Complement other women as we all need a boost sometimes!

2. Share Your Story With Others

Representation matters and we as women should use the powerful tool that is storytelling to inspire others to do the same and show women that they aren’t alone.

Whether your story is about inequality at home, at work, in education, in politics or in any other aspect of everyday life, share your experiences with others to take a stand against inequality and celebrate feminism.

It’s especially important for the younger generation to grow up hearing stories from powerful women and understand that discrimination in any way against women won’t be tolerated and isn’t okay.

If your story can impact at least one person, it’s worth sharing, right?!

3. Ensure Every Voice Is Heard

As women, we need to come together and help one another to ensure that every voice is heard, even those without a voice.

When you encounter discrimination towards women whether it be sexist remarks made on social-media or in person, call it out and don’t let it slide.

Some women may not be as vocal or as able to stand up for themselves, if you do notice gender discrimination or abuse, do something about it, if you feel able to.

We should all try to take a stand wherever we can to help tackle the issues that so many women still experience!

4. Give Love To The Women In Your Life

Empower the women in your life and celebrate those who have made us the women that we are whether it be your mum, your nan, your sister, your friends or your teachers.

Uplift women and tell them how much they mean to you and spend time with them. You can even dedicate an Instagram post or TikTok video to the women who you hold close to your heart.

This journey is something all women go on with most women experiencing gender-discrimination in one way or another in their lives.

Give appreciation to those beautiful, strong and important women that you know this Women’s Equality Day 2023.

Most importantly, give love to yourself as a woman, be proud of who you are and your gender!
