Ah, Halloween. The perfect excuse to dress to impress. Or dress to absolutely disgust your party guests! It really is the only time of year when you can be admired and frowned upon in equal measure for donning some ghastly, spine-chilling outfit.
Nothing brings out a person’s competitive streak quite like a fancy dress occasion, but this kind of friendly rivalry can lead to a spending spree you live to regret on the other 364 days of the year.
The great news is, you can still be the star of the show without parting with the kind of money that is even more terrifying than the costume itself. Pool your resources and you can pull together some frighteningly good garments in true DIY fashion!
Here are a few ideas to get you started:

This combination is so cheap and straightforward. Simply dig out your smartest black suit or dress, cover yourself in make-up or white face paint to achieve a pale appearance, and print off a black and white dialogue card in the style of the silent films with captions.
The only hard bit will be the challenge of remaining silent throughout an entire party – is it physically possible?!

It wouldn’t be Halloween without the unsettling sight of an unkempt doll, and this is an easy look to pull off on a budget. You will require a ripped-up dress, so make sure you pick your least favourite for this experiment!
Once that is sorted, simply get creative with the make-up. The paler the face, the scarier the doll – those are the rules! Big eyes and lips complete the ghoulish combination.

Where better to draw inspiration from than your favourite Snapchat filter? If one particularly takes your fancy, it will be effortless to recreate it as long as you can get your hands on some face paint.
The quirkier the better!

The humble scarecrow falls into the ‘tried and tested’ category- a guaranteed home run on Halloween. Dust down your overalls and get your hands on some straw, then all you need is a floppy hat and a marker pen to draw on a few stitches.
However, scarecrows are meant to stand still – can you really do that for the whole night? Maybe that rule should be relaxed just this once!

Why not team up with a buddy and go to the party as a pair? If you want to stick with the scary theme, you could cut some eye holes in a white blanket and rock up as ghosts.
For a different approach, take a leaf out of Scooby Doo’s book. The characters all wear normal clothes – Shaggy in a green shirt and brown trousers, Daphne in a purple dress!
