So, you want to be a teacher? Well you’ve come to the right place! The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 league table has been revealed, including more than 1500 universities across 93 different countries.

Being the largest most diverse university rankings to date means the league table is a very reliable source, based on 13 calibrated performance indicators.

The performance indicators measure a uni across four specific areas which are teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook!

Granted, choosing a course like education can be tough, and requires a lot of theory as well as practical work with aspects such as work placements.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best UK universities ranked for an education degree, to give you a head start on your decision. Let’s get started!

1. University Of Oxford

Coming in at number one we’ve got the University Of Oxford once again, who are also number one in the world, wow!

They offer a fabulous range of internationally-recognised courses with their PGCE giving you the opportunity to train to teach a secondary age group.

The education department works in partnership with over 37 secondary comprehensive schools in Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties too!

Each PGCE programme runs on a full-time basis for one academic year.

Successful students are also recommended for ‘Qualified Teacher Status’, which means they’ve met the requirements of the Government’s Teachers’ Standards, bonus!

If you’re training on the earlier course, you complete placements in both Foundation and Key Stage 1, with opportunities to grab nursery placements.

If you choose to study on the General Primary course, you’ll follow either the 5-9 years old specialist option with Key Stages 1 and 2 or the 7-11 years old option with placements in Key Stage 2 and a short placement in Key Stage 1.

This course gives you a qualification in primary education, leading to a provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

There’s a whole bunch of placements throughout the course, giving you the experience in a range of different settings including nursery/early ages and middle/upper stages!

Level 2 lets you participate in a “learning from life” placement which will take place in an educational environment that isn’t a Scottish school, such as a museum or educational charity.

Their PGDE combines two on-campus study modules with three school professional practice placements, so you’ll gain vital classroom skills as well as the theory itself, winner!

They have a number of fab unique resources such as the School of Education where students can plan and practice lessons surrounded by resources related to the school curriculum.

Manchester also offer a number of courses with the opportunity to study education alongside another subject too!

Fancy studying a PGDE? The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education is a 38-week course for graduates who want to train as primary school or secondary school teachers.

The Education, Culture and Childhood BA combines the fields of education and childhood studies, and is offered on a full and part-time basis.

Sheffield’s unique degree is one of few in the country to combine the two aspects, designed to prepare you for any area of education or children’s services!

They have a range of courses available to get your career kickstarted, all accredited by the General Teaching Council of Scotland.

Their PDGE programme is offered full time on campus and via distance learning, you can study either primary or secondary education.

It’s offered on a full-time basis over 36 weeks with 18 weeks spent on placement to give you good practice!
