Enough History for you? Liverpool John Moore’s University Spotlight

Steeped in history and tradition, Liverpool John Moores University prides itself on being one of the UK’s largest and most progressive universities.

Boasting a vibrant community of 25,000 students from more than 100 nations, it has a 2,500-strong team and 250 degree courses.

Liverpool John Moores recently claimed the number 74 spot in the Complete University Guide League Table for 2017, ranking higher than dozens of counterparts from across the country, and two years ago it was one of the highest climbers nationally in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the quality of research in the UK.

History

In 1823 The Liverpool Mechanics Institute was founded by people of power and influence who acknowledged the impact of education on society. This was followed by the introduction of the Liverpool Institute and School of Art and the Liverpool Nautical College. In 1900 the IM Marsh campus was opened, founded by Irene Mabel Marsh, a pioneer of Physical Education. These organisations laid the foundations for Liverpool John Moores, which has become a place which is proud to provide opportunities for all.

Charles Dickens once attended a party at the Institute, where he gave a speech, while over a decade later acclaimed television producer and screen writer Phil Redmond became an Honorary Professor of Media at the university, which took its name from businessman and philanthropist Sir John Moores. More recently, the Dalai Lama became an Honorary Fellow, and Olympian Beth Tweddle MBE also received an Honorary Fellowship.

Student accommodation

There is no shortage of quality student accommodation for those studying at Liverpool John Moores. Four properties in the city are provided by Homes for Students, one of the UK’s leading providers. The organisation works in partnership with the university and Student Union in order to deliver the best possible student experience.

Weekly prices at the four properties – Bedford Street South, Windsor Court, St Andrew’s Gardens and Agnes Jones House – include all your utility bills, free broadband and WiFi, communal study spaces, regular social events and secure cycle storage.

The legendary St Andrew’s Gardens is so close to the university that you can see the building from the balcony! It offers some of the highest standards in student accommodation in the city, and also has car parking spaces on a first come, first served basis.

Spacious Windsor Court, sitting in a handy central location, is less than a 10-minute walk away from St John Moores. If you fancy a bit of drama, the iconic Empire Theatre is on the doorstep! Bedford Street South, in the Georgian Quarter, is just a seven-minute journey to the university on foot. A mixture of one bedroom and two bedroom flats provide perfect privacy.

Another Georgian Quarter property, Agnes Jones House, is less than 10 minutes’ walk away from the university. The popular building is also surrounded by public transport links, making any journey a simple task.
