Best Student Bars for a Night Out in London…

As a new student in London, knowing where you are going to conduct your  nocturnal activities is probably one of the first things on your mind.

The good news is that London has something for everyone – whether you’re into garage music until 3am or prefer a chilled game of pool with friends. From the quirky and vibrant to the slick and sophisticated; here are some of the best bars in London for a student night out.

Moonlighting Club
Soho

Moonlighting has long been known to attract students of the city, not necessarily for its airs and graces but for its good old humble charm (and amazingly affordable drinks).

Head down on a Wednesday night to be part of the infamous student night known as ‘Cheapskates’, where the drinks start at just 90p and the music is proudly ‘Recession Session’ (that’s indie, 80s, hiphop, electro, oldskool and a bit of party mash-up, for those classic cheese vibes).

Grab your mates and head on down. You might not remember it, but you won’t regret it.

CLF Art Cafe
Peckham

A bar, a cafe, a creative hub…CLF Art Cafe is all those things and more. Stretching four floors, this place boasts a plethora of exhibitions, events and activities, all of which blend seamlessly into nights featuring local DJs and independent artists.

Spend a cultured afternoon indulging in music, film and art before mooching on to enjoy cocktails and food as the sun goes down. For the ultimate casual, non-committed night out…CLF is the place to go.

Roxy
Fitzrovia

Roxy is an informal basement bar where, for a small door fee, students can really get to know fellow students from a range of universities, backgrounds and cultures. Club nights start from around 10:30pm and the party is encouraged to linger long into the wee hours until 3:30am. There’s a generous Happy Hour from 6:30pm to 10:30pm with half-priced cocktail pitchers, and students can get reduced entry to all of their club nights courtesy of of their NUS card.

For a cosy, intimate alternative to hang out with friends, Roxy is your go-to place.

Drink, Shop, Do
King’s Cross

Drink, Shop, Do is a cafe and activity hub by day, and thriving bar by night, crossing cool grown-up partying with quirky childlike play. Some of the upcoming events at DSD include Indeedy Musical Bingo, Lego robot-building competitions and unicorn/stallion piñata making. (Students might also want to join them for sparkling pumpkin carving on Monday 24th October!)

Bright, vibrant and colourful, this is your place to go when you’re looking for something unusual or a humorous twist on your standard night out.

Roadhouse
Covent Garden

Few students don’t love the taste of the USA – whether that’s music, food or style. Luckily, Roadhouse has it all. This American-style retro bar and diner is superior to many of its Covent Garden counterparts thanks to its distinct style and popular range of signature cocktails.

With live bands and acts on every night, there’s never a dull moment, and students can even participate in a bit of Rockaoke on Mondays and Wednesdays to win a £100 bar tab! And not forgetting, of course, the food – burgers, dogs and wings await you in this little slice of classic America.

Piccadilly Institute
West End

No student night out would be complete without a stint in the famed madhouse that is Piccadilly Institute. From the sumptuous yet mind-boggling decor, to the artfully-named cocktails and themed rooms, students can expect plenty of twisted surprises that they won’t find anywhere else. Often described as ‘the Lewis Carroll of nightclubs’, it combines bold and adventurous interiors with fun features like the Liquid Therapy in a Padded Cell sharer cocktail and the ‘Milk Bar’ – inspired by the one in ‘A Clockwork Orange’, no less.

Entry is just £5 if you enter before 9pm, Monday to Thursday. Visitors who reserve their own booth through Late Night London can be treated to monthly offers and drink packages.
